3 Beautifully Scenic Denver Day Trips for 2021

If these 3 Denver Day Trips better aren’t on your bucket list, they need to be–NOW! Denver gives you mountains, water, and red rock formations all within a few hours! Here are my top 3 most recommended Denver Day Trips that you NEED to add to your bucket list for 2021!

1) Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is the place that a ton of people think of when they hear of Colorado. In fact, some people think that RMNP is the only place that mountains are in the whole state! While that isn’t true, there’s a reason that RMNP had almost 4.6 million visitors in 2018! The views are amazing and you don’t have to work very hard for them. In my opinion, Trail Ridge offers some of the best views and you don’t even have to leave your car to enjoy them! Dream Lake is another very popular hike in RMNP. Beware that you will lose reliable service shortly after you get through the park entrance. Download any hiking trails in advance (trails marked very well though).

PRO TIP: Start your day very early! Trailhead parking fills up by 8 am on most days!

RMNP is currently requiring reservations to enter the park from 6 am -5 pm due to COVID. Those can be found HERE. To enter without one you need to be through the gate before 6 am or plan activities for after 5 pm. They are very strict about this policy.

2) Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods is one of the most popular parks in Colorado Springs. GOTG is home to 1300 acres of rock formations and scenic hiking trails! This is another location where you can see so much beauty from the comfort of your car. With that said, I highly recommend pulling off on one of the many scenic pull-offs OR parking in the main parking lot and exploring the trails from there. High Point Overlook has some amazing views that you can drive to. This location overlooks the entire park to the north and mountains and Pike’s Peak to the west.

PRO TIP: Avoid this place like the plague on a Saturday unless you get an early start or plan to catch the sunset. There is no entry fee so it gets packed very, very quickly.

3) Lake Dillon (Dillon Reservoir)

Lake Dillon is a popular spot in Summit County because it’s a huge body of water surrounded by mountains and cute mountain towns (Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco, etc). If you’re interested in participating in some water sports, this is an awesome option. People fish, kayak, SUP, and rent boats! If you’d rather stay on land, there are a number of amazing hiking nearby that give you epic lake + mountain views. The majority of them don’t require you to work too hard to get them either!

PRO TIP: Check rentals ahead of time to make reservations! If there aren’t any available rentals near Dillon, check Frisco, Breckenridge, and Silverthorne!

Can I Bring My Dog?

RMNP is the only place on this list that isn’t very dog friendly. RMNP requires dogs to stay in parking lots or paved areas because of the wildlife. You will face heavy fines from a park ranger if you’re caught with a pup on the trail. Garden of the Gods and Lake Dillon are very dog friendly! Remember to keep your pup leashed when required!

What Should I Pack?

  • WATER WATER WATER
  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Layers
  • Poop bags for your pup
